Fish: Striped Bass
Heading West to Lake Powell 8/24-8/29
Post By: fishinwfoos      Posted: 8/16/2011 3:50:18 PM     Points: 1475
Hey guys/gals-

I am heading to Lake Powell next week and I was wondering if anyone could reccomend any guides or if anyone has any idea where the best place to get some info on the current fishing conditions are? I have searched quite a bit but have not really found much....WOW FE is a great source and makes me appreciate what the site can provide!

We are most likely going to be targeting Bass of all kinds. Largies, smallies and Stripers.

Thanks a bunch for the help- hope everyone has a productive rest of the season.

Waynes is by far the most informative site, if you email him he will respond, as questions and he can refer a guide (actually I think there are links on the site).

But I would save my money and just follow the info you will catch fish.

Take some pics

Fish,
Send an email to Jarrett Edwards. He lives on Lake Powell when he isn't traveling around the country. You can contact him through his Field Editor bio page. He travels a lot so I am not sure where he is, but he will get the email.
Have fun and good luck.

Do you have a boat?

If so I wouldn't hire a guide, the fish are ridiculously patternable(stripers). If not I understand, but have no guide reccomendations.

I can also say that even if you are shore camping there are a plethora of coves you can hike into and get into action for largies and often stripers.

I was there last year around this time and all of Bullfrog and most of Moki bay erupted in boils in early a.m. and late p.m.. A heavy jig with a curly tail will kill it in the boils. I got tired of fish thrashing trebles from topwater's around my bare legs.

Plus you can get the hook out quick and get back to casting. They dont stay up for that long(20 minutes was the longest boil we saw). Once they go down you can troll spoons and big rattlebaits to catch a few stragglers.

In the afternoon find a bluff walll and use a half of anchovy with no weight about 20' down. That's how I landed one just shy of 30". You can also chum with the Anchovy's there.

Biggie-

Yes we have a boat. LUND 1900 LE with a 150 Yaammie and matching yammie 9 HP kicker, trolling motors and electronics galore. I think you are right, maybe save some SSS and not hire a guide. Sounds like the striper fishing should be pretty easy to figure out!

Thanks a bunch for the info- Helps a TON Brother-

Hey- I also have a few Diawa AccuDepth linecounter reels I will be trolling with that I got from your garage sale. Thanks again for posting the garage sale last year. Left work and ended up with the two line counters that day. I can tell you that they have put a lot of fish in the boat.

I have heard , don't know if it's a fact, but all boats from Colorado must undergo a mussel cleaning, cost depends on the boat, and they start at about $60.00, done by private places near the lake.
