Saskatchewan Bound
by: David Coulson 4/23/2011
When I had a tackle shop in Grand Junction a group of us used to fish Northern Saskatchewan annually for northern pike and walleye. Since moving to Fort Collins, I lost contact with the Canada group and somehow have not managed to get back. I’ve never lost the desire to return as I have wonderful memories of phenomenal fishing and great times. This year things changed. Saskatchewan here I come, albeit in a much different fashion. Years ago the trips were planned over several months. They required figuring out who was going, deciding which boats and motors to take, working out the camping gear, planning menus (heavy on junk food), buying food . . . you get the idea. It was a ton of work, but once we’d made the 24 hour drive, spent half a day packing in, set up camp and then finally fishing, the six days on the water (out of a ten day trip) were worth the effort. This year will be drastically different as I will be a guest of Arctic Lodges located on Reindeer Lake in Northern Saskatchewan. The trip is all inclusive, which simply means we show up with rods in hand and enjoy being pampered for nine days of fishing from June 24 through July 2. I say we, as I talked Ron, who accompanied me on all my past trips up north and is one of my best friends, into joining me for the trip. Normally the trip is five days/four nights but when I visited with Duane, the lodge owner, about coming up he asked if that would be enough time on the water. I don’t know about you, but having fished Saskatchewan all summer wouldn’t be enough time on the water. So it was decided to double the stay. I’m looking forward to not having anything to do with my time, but fish, eat, do a bit of writing, and maybe some evening card playing with a good scotch in hand. Rough life, but someone has to do it. If this interests you, give some thought to joining us, either the June 24-28 or June 28-July 2 time slot. As I write this there are a few openings left. Now if you’re a real glutton, as I am, speak with Duane about joining us the full time doubling the trip might be more affordable then you think. You can contact him at http://www.arcticlodges.com, or simply click on the link in my sponsor listing. Think about it, nine days with nothing to do but chase trophy size northern pike, lake trout, walleye, and grayling. I personally intend to catch my share of all species. And if you should join us, I will be happy to show you how I approach each species with a fly rod. Needless to say, I’m more than a little excited about this trip, and rest assured you will be hearing more about this trip, as I will keep you updated about my preparations, discuss how I intend to approach each species with flies, and as the lodge has internet access, I will update you daily while I’m there. Only 61 days until I fly out of Denver for Winnipeg, but who’s counting?

Now, to just get you some practice here before you go!! Just a tournament or two, some practice from a boat, a few master anglers to get you ready for some massive fish. Nah, you don't need any practice, you're a master!!
Again, congrats!!
FS Lucius, CO 4/23/2011 6:04:44 PM What can I say....I am extremely jealous!! I went on a fly-in canadian fishing trip back in 1999 to gods river lodge what a fisherman's dream!!! Literally. 100 pike per person per day not even breaking a sweat!!. Reindeer lake is definitely on my radar to fish sometime, only if it wasn't thousands of dollars, I would be there in a heart beat!! I know Reindeer lake has true monster pike in there!! Have fun dave and post pictures!! DOC JAWS, CO 4/24/2011 7:41:01 AM Sounds like an awesome trip. This type of trip interests me. Unfortunately (and Frotunately), I already have a trip to Lake St. Joseph in Ontario for walleye and pike during that exact time slot. If you do a trip to Saskatchewan next year, I would be interested. Have a great trip and am looking forward to your updates! codykalous, CO 4/28/2011 7:09:59 PM wish that I could join you Dave... Have a great trip!!! IceFishingFool, CO 4/29/2011 12:52:20 PM Congrads Dave. Those kind of trips are wonderful memories. Must be why I buy Loto tickets now and then.
