Old Guy's continue to rule
by: David Coulson 1/13/2014
I had meant to get this up yesterday, but being an Old Guy (OG) I slept in to start Sunday. Getting up at 3 a.m. Saturday, seven plus hours on the road (nasty drive, with icy roads one way, heavy traffic heading home) and a day on the ice tuckered me out. By the time I was ready to be productive, it was time for the Bronco game. Watching football is not tiring, but like many fans, I had a few drinks during the game. Unlike Hemingway, I don’t do my best writing under the influence of fine Scotch.
Saturday was a gathering of some Fish Explorer members to fish, have a bite to eat, and decide which group of anglers, the Young Guys (YGs) or the Old Guys, are the better fishers. The losers get the coveted boot. The last meeting prior to Saturday, was at Boyd, when once again the YGs received their trophy. Saturday they decided they liked it so much that they decided to keep it a while longer. It seems only right as the current owner, who truly enjoys having it sit on his fireplace mantel, failed to bring it to the event.
These informal gatherings have been going on for some time now and I’m not completely sure who started it, but I believe two key players were Tiny Stevens (John) and IceFishingFool (Bud). I’ll leave it to them to write the history of these games. Needless to say, there has been plenty of mudslinging over the years between the OGs and YGs. In truth, the match-ups are about even in outcome, although I think the OGs have the edge. I suspect that’s because the losing side gets to determine the rules and where of the next outing will be, home court advantage so to speak.
So it was decided this gathering would occur at Williams Fork Reservoir. Care was taken to check with the managing agency to make sure everything was permissible. The rules were simple, no entry fee, just show up whenever, fish until one or so, meet for lunch (Wattzz made chicken noodle soup), compare notes (total length of top three fish count), and declare a loser. OK, winners, but the real interest is in who gets the boot.
On occasion, as was the case this time, Fish Explorer and others put up a few token prizes for the top finishers, FxR plus subscriptions, t-shirts, and stickers primarily. This time there was a surprise prize from Granby Bait and Tackle. When John and Tracy stopped in to get suckers and upon hearing about the gathering, unsolicited they gave them $20 to go to the second place finisher. That was highly appreciated, and I hope every Fish Explorer member stops by their shop the next time you’re in the area and says, both, hi and thank you.
Looking over the scores it was close and had a couple of the YGs remembered to check in on time, the YGs (who outnumbered the OGs) might just have won. But telling time, like fishing, is also a learned skill that comes with age.
So without further ado, here are the top results of those who reported in on time and a listing of those in attendance.
Shiverfix (David) 34
Fisherman1(Bill) = 13
Shiverfix’s wife (I apologize for not remembering her name)
Fishseal(Sean) and friend
Cody (Dave’s son-in-law)
Bill (Friend of Dave)
Erik (with Tony) – Honorable mention 22 inch Lake Trout
I may be missing someone and I do apologize as it wasn’t intentional, so if I do please post the ommissions to my embarressment. Also, I took a lot of pictures, but failed to adjust for the lighting and ended up with a bunch of silhouettes, sorry about that.
Anyway, the YGs are already plotting their next attempt to best the OGs and might I suggest the following to help them. Parity in the number of anglers, two YGs for every one OGs. Still not fair, but closer. Parity in time on water, YGs get to fish two hours to every hour the OGs fish, still not fair for the YGs, but that way I can get my sleep. And finally, YGs can fish any legal method, and restrict OGs to one fly or lure of their choice.
No matter the rules. I’m looking forward to the next OG/YG outing when us OGs will once again give the YGs a much deserved “boot.”

Very nice stuff!
Unofficially, a group of us started the first one at Pinewood several years ago in July of 2008!
The next was later that year at Boyd Oct 18th 2008

Thanks Marty, I've not made all of them, which is most regretful. They're a lot of fun, and I think I love the BS that takes place before, during, and after, as much as the fishing, They've taken place at Cherry Creek, Tarryall, Aurora, and Elevenmile (bad outing) also.

Looks like fun guys, Jim/ Biteme did a few soon after that here at some metro lakes. he never gets really any credit for all that he did. But he helped alot of anglers meet other like minded people who are life long friends.
David Coulson (Flyrodn), CO 1/13/2014 11:10:51 AM
Thanks Daris. There are lot of people who don't get the credit they deserve. I appreciate it when they're mentioned, it's never my intent to slight anyone. Jim is a great angler who I've had the privilege of fishing with.
FISHRANGLER, CO 1/13/2014 11:12:05 AM
I'll be at the next one that doesnt involve trout. Most if not all of these are set up on the plus side BTW. So if you would like to join in the future sing up. Someone going to do a Bang and Bash this year? Remember those gatherings. Its where we draw names and put a none boater with a boater.
IceFishingFool, CO 1/13/2014 11:15:31 AM
WTG Jon, knew, I could count on you. Wish I could have gone, but a surprise visit from a brother made my day. If Jim and a few other OG's had been there if would have been like rubbing salt in an open wound for the YG's Id like to hold another tailgate Beer Batter Deep Fry of Walleyes/gills/crappie/perch. And oh yes, Catfish for FISHRANGLER, But I would have to figure out how to catch some Walleyes first though. Maybe I can get some pointers from Master FOM ? OGS RULE !!
FISHRANGLER, CO 1/13/2014 11:21:54 AM
YEAH you Old farts have been kicker the Yg's butts for a while now but thast going to end soon I hear there is a shortage of Depends so you all wont be able to head outside. Bud they sell Walleye on line and can ship it to you from Wisconsin HAHA And Bud only store bought Cats okay..LOL
Tbubb, CO 1/13/2014 11:54:48 AM
Too bad I didn't weigh in, but the trudge back and forth was more than my post-surgical knee was going to take. I'd have placed 4th on the two fish I had in by 11am. But it was the afternoon bite that was hot, so I am glad we didn't leave.
Had walking conditions been better, we would have joined for lunch.

Every fish cut by YG is an accident.
Every fish landed by OGs is the result of thorough research, summary of wisdom and work of art - always.

Ended up being a great day! Drive up seemed foreboding, but the weather couldn't have been better. I had to help Dave out a bit with some batteries so he could find the fish and even then I eventually had to tell him where they were :-) I realized I forgot the boot around Winter Park, couldn't believe it! I'll definitely have it at the next one, which won't be too far off. That can, by the way, was full of soup at the time... though it was emptied in a similar way earlier. Had a ton o' fun! Thanks Wattzz and GBNT and everyone that made it.
David Coulson (Flyrodn), CO 1/13/2014 12:49:07 PM
Uhm, and the rest of the story is I let Cody use the depth finder and didn't fish with it. And I'll admit that when I heard that Tom was catching fish, I moved as I figured if a YG was catching fish, it had to be a hot spot. I was right.
Tiny Stevens, CO 1/13/2014 1:08:07 PM
All right.. I've heard enough from you OG's! Wipe the drool from your chins, take your Geritol, and read up! You OG's won because many of us YG's weren't able to attend, myself included! Don't get your Depends in a wad, there will be a next time as soon as the ice is off! I already have a MEGA OG/YG Challenge in the works! Details to come....
p.s. .. I believe that Heavy C and Bite ME wee the official gathering starters years ago as well. For a little history.. I was the one who actually caught the boot one night at Cherry Creek fishing from shore. There has been conjecture that it fits me, but that is not true.. not even my feet are big enough to fit that Sasquatch sized boot!
IceFishingFool, CO 1/13/2014 4:46:39 PM
LOL good one Dave, Sure hope Tiny's not planning on a crawdad boil, or we will have to teach him how to catch those too ?
David Coulson (Flyrodn), CO 1/13/2014 5:00:07 PM
Ouch, Bud I see you believe in the adage, "spare the rod, spoil the YG." Tiny's right, get enough YGs and they'll even the odds. Per my suggestion at least 2 to 1. I'm looking forward to the MEGA face off, provided it's not another all-nighter, I need my rest.
fom, CO 1/13/2014 5:24:45 PM
If I have said once I have said it a thousands times, it is just a natural fact that [ OLD GUYS RULE}, and all you YGS know it is true , so take your medicine or boot like a man, You guys are just lucky there weren't of us OGS there , I could not make it , I ran out of depends, Ps have any of you seen my boat, I seem to have misplaced it again, the wife said it was in the garage . I looked , saw a suv , car and some long gray thing fishing pole in it .
Walleyeone, CO 1/13/2014 6:08:16 PM
The first get togethers I remember were at Boyd and Lon Hagler. I think the guys name was deadfish or something like that.
We need more OGs to paticipate. We were outnumbered but that made it even I guess. All you ygs better hurry with your next challenge because in not so long Mac attack will move to the OG roster and then you'll be down another top angler.
I wish to thank Chad for getting it together. Also Tracy for driving.
It was a rough day on the ice. The sun was out and the wind quit and the temp. when we left was a balmy 46.( you couldn't have asked for better weather.
anglerwannabe, CO 1/13/2014 8:14:20 PM
HEY we're not limited to Depends any more. There are plenty of new bladder control products on the market now!
Sounds like you guys all had lots of fun. When you do this on regular water and not ice, would love to come to one of these.
JKaboom, CO 1/13/2014 9:01:15 PM
I love the write up and all the comments!!!

Yep , JD. That get together at Lon Hagler was actually a trash clean up day/picnic. It's always good getting together with some fishing buddies.
fishman1, CO 1/13/2014 9:55:22 PM
I,(fishman1), spent the day fishing with Tom,(Opencage). He impressed me with his fish hooking skills although the ice hole proved rather daunting to him. Also Tom impressed me on the rideup. I would have claimed every one of those. Bill

Winner of best response on this thread, well played sir.
So when is there goin' to be one that doesn't involve cold and trout? I think an "OG/YG Catfish Faceoff" is in order, since all these old folks keep runnin' off at the mouth. If we do, make sure you guys bring your life alert if you get lost walkin' around at night.
IceFishingFool, CO 1/14/2014 7:43:26 AM
Now Buck, what makes you think OG's would get out fished, Catfish like bait, and are caught mostly when using bait, be it day or night. Where do you think the term "Master baiters" came from ? Are you saying only YG's are Real Masterbaiters ? LOL.
HeavyC, CO 1/14/2014 8:14:27 AM
NO WAY! There has been a DANNY sighting!!! What up Danny?!?!
Coyute, CO 1/14/2014 9:00:11 AM
Senility can have its advantages. Comparing yourself to Hemingway? Really? LOL!
Catman1979, CO 1/14/2014 9:07:52 AM
Oh, no master baiters over here, gonna be a night of kickin' old dudes off docks and hiding your Preperation H. Seems like us young guns have that show down, on lock. Plus, this fat guy runs way faster then you dudes can push a walker.
RPG, CO 1/14/2014 9:39:51 AM
Dave should write a sequel to Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea. It could be titled Old Guy and the Boot. :)

I was always taught to respect my elders (OG's) and to let OG's think that, with age, comes wisdom. Us YG’s just having too much respect to let you OG's take the boot back. We YG's had the OGs out numbered 2 to 1. Tell me we didn't take one for the team!
I'm on the OG/YG fence, because in May, I actually fall over the fence and become an OG.
New rule after May "No mercy for the weak YG's”
Until then, YG's rule and OG's drool.
FISHRANGLER, CO 1/14/2014 12:44:45 PM
Tiny has a idea for the next one i think will be fun and a challange so some. Others it will be easy but it should bring more anglers out. When he figures it all out Im sure he will post up his Idea for the next open water YG.OG face off.
fom, CO 1/14/2014 7:35:01 PM
Any body see my boat ? Still do not remember where I left it. Wife keeps saying it is in the garage , but for the life of me I just can not see it in there , oh wow I just found it ,I was in the garage looking for it when my wife turned on the light and what do you know, there it was, thanks to all you guys who helped me look for it .

Historically these OG/YG tourneys were kept at 2 per year. More than that, and interest wanes. The NEXT scheduled OG/YG tourney WILL be during open water, and it will be the MEGA Challenge! It will be a challenge unlike any other OG/YG tourney seen! I will post more as the details arise.
On a side note, even though there are only 2 official OG/YG tourneys, I encourage get togethers, and gatherings such as the fish frys, and pot lucks we all enjoy!
The OG/YG tourneys are a "perk" if you will of plus side membership and are a blast! I encourage anyone on the free side interested in participating in one, to sign up on the plus side!

I call brown sugar on Tiny catching the boot out of Cherry Creek, anybody who has fished with Tiny at Creek knows he couldn't catch a cold there, much less the prized magic boot. Young guys and their usual delusions of grandeur...grandeur young guys cannot hope to achieve until they become a coveted and prized OLD GUY!
IceFishingFool, CO 1/15/2014 10:24:53 PM
YG's got "Stumped" two times in a row, prior to the Stump going into the Boot.
JOHN_COSprings, CO 1/18/2014 1:59:29 PM
Lets ensure, that for the MEGA tourney, us shore anglers at least have some firm ground to stand upon, literally. Boyd last year was like a mud wrestling pit of doom with the unwary angler sucked down into a foot of mud. I am sure the YGs would have won easily - sadly, half our shore anglers were never be seen again after venturing out onto the flats. Either way, was a lot of fun and I do look forwards to us YGs returning the boot to it's rightful owners.
Catman1979, CO 1/18/2014 8:30:13 PM
Yeah John, funny stuff there. It has been a long time since I fished Boyd, and that's exactly how I remember those trips.
