Farewell To an Awesome Ice Season (Part 2)
Guest Blog by: Shane DuBois 4/15/2013
This year I had a specific goal on catching a big lake trout through the ice. I had been trying for the past year and a half with no success of any giants. On one of the first trips of the year we ran into some cool guys on the lake as we were heading out, that were battling a monster laker. So we decided to stick around to see just how big this guy was going to be! After a few runs they finally got it through the hole and it was a nice 37 inch laker! This fueled my hunger even more to catch a giant! I spent the next few weeks catching lake trout, but nothing monstrous, and one of my friends who had never caught a lake trout before wanted to catch one so we decided to fix that. His first lake trout ever was a 33 inch 8-10 lb laker! Some guys have some good beginnerís luck! I landed my personal best lake trout then of 31 inches shortly after he caught his. About a month later my prayers were finally answered when I finally got my monster lake trout coming in at 39 inches! We caught many fish in the mid 20′s (inches) throughout the season, and it was a great ice fishing season for lake trout with the cherry to put on top with a few nice fish.
Sadly this past Thursday and Friday we made our last ice trip of the season. It snowed and was pretty windy on both days, and we ended up fishing in 3-5 feet of water. It wasn't our best days out on the ice, but it was a blast none the less. We seen a moose on the way up, a Bald Eagle at the lake, and my last fish of this ice season was a nice 24 inch cutbow! We also caught a few nice browns and some fat 18-19 inch cutbows. I would like to say we ended the ice season in style, and what an ice season it was! I am already looking forward to next yearís season, but with the success we had these last few months, I hope it continues into this yearís open water season that is in full swing!
I hope everyone had a fun and exciting ice season this year as I did, and I am already thinking about next ice fishing season! If anyone is interested in getting more info on this past year of icing, or maybe some info for the upcoming year, please click here!

Nice read Shane. How thick is the ice up Walden way? My brother is flying out from VA on the 28th of April and I'd like more than anything to get him into some big trout. Personally I'm hoping for open water but ice is fine too.
