Lake Trout Mafia
by: Bernie Keefe 8/31/2012
I came up with the lake trout mafia name one day on another fishing site. There was a thread talking about something and I wrote in my signature " I am a card carrying member of the Lake Trout Mafia and darn proud of it". This statement blew up. It seemed most people loved it or hated it.
I started thinking about revisiting the idea of a "club" or group that would be involved in preserving our fisheries. The lake trout mafia seems like a good name for this group. We are a very secretive group of guys that will not step out of our circle. We are known to "upset" a few people on the internet. I think we might even be a little more "off base" then the musky guys. (not quite sure about that one)
I have been doing a little bit of promoting it, there are some hats, i am looking for stickers and other novelties to help fund it. So far I have invested over $2000 in a logo and hats.
We do have a face book page "lake trout mafia" please go and like it.
As of now I have not done much with it, but now would be a good time to mention it. I have page on my website for the lake trout mafia, its blank but its a start.
Please give me some "real" feedback on what you would like to see and do. Thanks Bernie

Bernie: I am one that would be in full support, I have witnessed what happened to the Lake Trout population at Lake Tahoe, really sad to see what happened there, and think it would be a shame if the same thing happens to Granby, Jefferson or any lake/reservoirI have never done the (Face Book) thing, because of the way its run. I think your slant/Idea is long over due.

I agree! I think a lot needs to be done to educate anglers about this species: reproduction, growth rate, food sources, etc. the reason we all fish for lakers is for the chance of hooking and landing a monster, but if nobody makes an effort to preserve the specie and it's waters that chance will no longer exist.

Great idea! My buddy and I came up with something similar to this on the lake one day, but it never made it past the conception stage and the Fat Tire. The timing for this couldn't be better - count me in.

Bernie, I like it.
There's a huge need to organize the Lake Trout fanatics in the state so we can be seen and heard. Recall last year, we were hearing the DOW downplaying the Lake Trout crowd, saying that they were few and far between? That all the interest on Blue Mesa concerned Kokanees?
Count me in.

Sounds like a great idea. I would be happy to buy stickers,ec to advertise the cause and help spread the word among other fisherman about what we should do to help the species. I definately fish lakers for the chance to photograph a 20 pounder!
