2012 Ft. Carson Military Kid’s Fishing Day: June 16
by: Jeff Jones , California5/14/2012
For several years now Colorado Bass Federation Nation, its affiliated Bass Clubs and members, and other volunteer Colorado anglers from Colorado TBF, CO Walleye Assoc. etc., have been taking children of deployed parents from Ft. Carson, just south of Colorado Springs, out for a ½ day of fishing and boating fun at Pueblo Reservoir. This has become a big deal for both the families and our boating partners and it's a day everyone looks forward to every year.
The Denver Bassmasters Bass Club and member Sam Heckman has taken the reins for organizing the volunteer side of things. The Balfour-Beatty Housing people at Ft. Carson will supply the buses and personnel to transport the kids and families.
We are asking for boaters to volunteer, whether it is from our state's bass clubs or the walleye association or other boating volunteers. Hopes Float will participate with their pontoon boat as they have in the past. Anyone who would like to offer their services is welcome and encouraged to participate.
This is a great way to say thank you to the men and women and their families for the service they give to us and our great country and allow us to have the freedoms we enjoy. The kids truly love it. Some of the photos that have been taken have been immediately emailed or sent electronically to the deployed parents serving throughout the world. The response has been great.
Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial is underwriting a large portion of this, including t-shirts for all attendees. Wounded warriors will be in attendance. Famous Dave's BBQ will provide the catered lunch. Sam's Club will supply breakfast foods and drinks for the boats. Ribbons and medallions as well as trophies for largest, smallest, oddest catch, etc. will be awarded. Rods and reels and bags of supplies (tackle, sunscreen, caps, widgets and gizmos), nightcrawlers, will be given to each child. If you are a company and would like to participate, we gladly welcome the help, (donations, etc.) to offset our expenses.
Most importantly we need to get kids on the water and to do this we need boating volunteers to take them fishing for a few hours in the morning. This year will be the largest event ever with more kids than ever. If you would like to support this effort and say Thank You for your service to the families of our service men and women please contact Tom Grace for information on how you may do so.
Boaters will need to arrive early for boat inspections – 5-6 am. Fishing will be from about 8 am to noon. This will be fun and very rewarding. Let's again help these kids and families have a memorable day. Questions: contact Tom Grace.
Thank You!
