More Than Fishing
by: Ryan Wood 3/28/2012

There is a lot on my fishing calendar over the next few days.  This weekend is the Denver Junior Bassmaster Club kick off which always includes a lot of free gear and yet another reason to visit Bass Pro Shops.  Also, the junior club has a new leader, Curtis Welch, so I’d like to hear his plans for the upcoming season.

Then there’s the Larimer County Fishing Expo where I was looking forward to visiting booths and attending seminars, saying “hi” to Chad and talking to the FishExplorer staff and members.  I was also looking forward to the casting competition and showing off my skills with my new St. Croix rod.

Being spring break, I was also looking forward to getting out on the water or to a local pond and catching some fish.

I’m going to miss it all though.  I’m disappointed, but also very excited.  I will be on a mission trip with my church to build a house for a needy family in Mexico. The house we will be building will take 3 days to build and will be VERY small – only 11 feet by 22 feet. To us this is no more than a nice sized shed, but this house that we are building will be a hundred times better for the family than where they are living now.  I know this is a good thing to be doing for other people so that helps to offset all that I’ll be missing.

We’re supposed to take a quick trip to the beach.   I have my travel rod packed and have done my research and plan to cast into the Sea of Cortez a couple of times.  Hopefully I’ll catch something nice!

Looking forward to seeing you at the Larimer County Expo. My hat is off to you for putting the needs of others before fishing. As important as fishing is for some of us, recognizing there are times when it needs to take a back seat is an admirable trait. Kudos.
