Catfish Grapes
by: Lloyd Tackitt , Texas6/20/2012

The old man took his eight year old grandson fishing, they sat on the bank to eat lunch.

Grandpa said "I ever tell you about catfish grapes?

"No sir, what're those?"

"I was fishing one time, just up the river a bit.  Wasn't having much luck and I spotted a place where a big walnut limb hung out over a deep hole against the bank. That limb had a grapvine all wrapped around it, but I didn't pay that any attention at the time.   Thought it was likely looking being deep and shaded and all, so I cast my minnow in there half a dozen times.  No bites.  I was fixing to wade on down some more when one of those mustang grapes fell and a big old catfish stuck it's head up and caught that grape befoe it could hit the water.  There was a whole lot of swirling and frothing as other catfish tried to take it from him."

"Really?  I didn't know catfish like grapes!"

"Sure.  They're sweet and juicy aren't they?  They love those grapes as much as we do.  They just sit under a grapeveine and wait for them to fall.  That's how I learned to catch catish when the grapes are ripe."

"How'd you do that?"

"I waded to the bank and walked back in the trees a bit until I found some I could reach and plucked them.  Then I waded back out, put one on a hook and chunked it under that grapevine.  Hadn't hardly hit the water that I had a big old channel cat on for a good fight.  Put him on the stringer and did  it again and got another one right off.  I kept that up until I had a fine mess of fish for your grandma to fry up.   Sure was good too.  They'd eaten so many grapes their meat had turned purple and was sweet and tasted like wine."

"Purple catfish?  Really?  Cool!"

"Yep, and not only that, when I was cleaning them I checked their stomachs and that's all they'd been eating.  Everyone of them was full of grapes all mashed up and gooey."

"That sounds gross."

"Gross?  Why I didn't think so.  I took all those grapes out of their bellies and put it right into jars.  Already made into grape jam don't you know, no point wasting it."

The boy threw his peanut butter and jelly sandwhich into the river with a look of horror on his face and started spitting and gagging.

Grandpa laughed, then took a long swig from his flask..

Grandson after spitting out the last of the sandwhich "I ever tell you what I put into your jug of shine?"

Grandpa spat out the mouthful of whisky and looked hard at the boy for a second.  Breaking into laugher he said "You learn fast boy, you'll do son, you'll do just fine.

Always feel free to spin a yarn to the little ones - they love it and tell them to their little ones years later. I had an uncle that was the world's best yarn spinner, I sure miss him and his stories.
