FishExplorer.com Blogs

Winner!
by: Alan Peak , Colorado5/1/2012
When I started this contest I thought it could go into two directions.  I wasn't sure if anyone would try something new and make a video.  FishExplorer members turned out some amazing things in the last few weeks that I would say, in my humble opinion that were truly remarkable.  I applaud the members that submitted videos for trying something different other than posting their regular fishing photographs.  I am positive that the members creating the digital films and the people watching all learned something about the process.

Fellow blogger Jon Hill and the guys over at Xstream Tackle helped me judge this one.  It was a very tough task to say the least.  We all have came to the same conclusions about what we saw.

Honorable mentions go out to a few people.  Please check out their great submissions as I think we all can learn from them.  Jkaboom started things off right by submitting his time-lapse of his Antero trip.  I am still trying to figure out some of his editing techniques.  Alanlf5280's video was clean and crisp and to the point.  Panfishin went a completely different direction than everyone else and made a comical fishing show.  CMarbles showed what a true ninja can do with lures the size of fish you normally catch on the weekends.  Vanish did his video with only a cellphone, he really pushed the limits with technology.  Cool videos!

Refisherman put many different places together with a multitude of species.  Xstream's staff put it best when they pointed out how well that it kept their attention over the course of the entire video.  Also, they liked the choice of music.  Third place goes to Refisherman, great job!

MIP has an artistic eye that really is something to behold.  He flawlessly edited his work and added images of the surroundings.  If you have not seen this video and are interested in making your own, MIP shows some great editing tricks and how to set up great scene.  Jon Hill stated it best when he used the word "cinematography" to describe how MIP put his clips together.  Congrats MIP, second goes to you!

Without catching a fish, Catman1979 got all of our attention.  He told a story of his love of fishing from starting of young, what he does now and passing it off to the future.  He played around with some neat edit tricks and time lapse.  He showed it is not always about catching huge fish, or fish at all as in his film.  He personifies what this website should be about by showing his love for the sport and passing his knowledge down.

So, with that, Catman1979 takes first prize.  I only announced the GoPro Hero for first prize.  Bloggers Jon Hill, Rick Schroeder and I have one of our favorite places we would like to share with you.  We are going to bring all of our GoPros, which will be six in all, and make one sweet video together.  Eagle Claw is throwing in four Trailmaster Combos so we can get to our spot with some new setups.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please checkout the sponsors below.  They helped out tremendously with this.  It would be great if you 'liked' them on facebook and got to know more about what they do.  I would not have put their donations into this contest if I did not believe in their companies and what they do.

Eagle Claw has generously donated four Trailmaster spinning combos so that we can head up to the mountains in search of some tigers with the winner, Catman1979.  These Trailmasters have some really cool features and I am excited to get them on the water.  Plus, they are matched with a lifetime warranty.

Xstream generously donated quite a bit of gear for this one too.  I have an immense amount of gear sitting around for second and third place.  They have thrown in a monopod, miniflex tripods, a bunch of SD cards at Class 10 speed, and three gift certificates to the new Worm Bar at Xstream.

Mountain Equipment Recyclers has finished up moving to their new location.  They had a GoPro hanging around and thought it would be perfect to add to a video contest.  They also threw in a $25 gift certificate to get some gear.  They are now located at 1024 South Tejon in a bigger location.  They have some great deals on quality outdoor equipment.  MER has also given $15,000 to date to military charities.

HomeOfTheBraveOutdoors.com
threw in some trout slaying inline spinners.  I have used these guys at Rampart and they are great.  Plus, they are handmade in the USA and their prices beat most others.

Warrior lures
also threw in some lures.  Their spoons, which have been hard tested in the Great Lakes Region are just coming to Colorado.  Originally made to troll, I cast them as they sink slower and flutter more than any other spoon I can find.  Plus they will put your favorite pattern on their spoon for no extra charge, and you only need to buy one.

Theflystop.com put up $25 of hand tied flies of the contestant's choosing.  That should add up to over 30 flies.  I have 150 of their flies and love them.  With that will come a new flybox.

FishExplorer has also put up a few months of Plus membership.  There is some great information on that side!

Safe-Light-PALight
contacted me and has given me two military spec flashlights.  These things are great!  Admittingly, I have been playing with one of them a little bit.  It can glow for two years on one battery.  Great for night fishing.

Thank you to all that have participated, donated and watched!  I hope there will be more in the future!

Man, I don't know what to say. First I will say that I just ran around my apartment after seeing this, which is worse because I am a big guy, I think I made my neighbor below me mad. I just wanted to say for one, that I really thought MIP's was gonna win, his shots were amazing. I would also like to say that all of the films were pretty spot on, from the bow fishing video to Cam hittin' the bass hard. Thanks should also go out to the sponsors, and to Xstream for participating. You all made this guy one happy fellow, and I plan for sure to pay it all forward.

Congrats Catman1979! The turnout of contestants was impressive with the amount of donations even more impressive. This was probably one of the most enjoyable contest I have ever entered. I learned a lot about filming and editing and got to use a little creativity I didn't know I had. Now we have to wait for Catman1979 next video.

I think the best part of watching all of these videos was seeing all of the different styles of fishing, different types of fish, the variety of scenery and the different types of creativity that went in to making these things. Congrats to the winners! But honestly congrats to everyone that put the effort in to creating some of the best videos I have watched! Awesome job on everyones part! Can't wait until the next one!!!! - Jon

Congested to all if the winners! There were some pretty sweet shots by the top guys. I can't wait to do this again, and I might just have to save up for a go pro camera myself to get some more variety in the shots! Thank you for putting all of this together and getting all of the sponsor donarions Alan!! And thanks to Tzeng for providing the forum to do this on. Time to get back out on the water to get more footage!

I am glad there are so many positive comments. It has been a pleasure getting this going. I hope that many people gained some ideas to take away from this. I know I did. One thing that I forgot to say about everyone that submitted a video, it takes guts to put your work out in front of everyone and for that I applaud them.

tatonka, CO   5/2/2012 8:10:52 PM
Catman - Loved absolutely loved your video also, I'm glad you won dude. Awesome stuff man. All the videos were great and showed what talented anglers/videotographers we have here, but yours had that personal touch!

Thanks again guys, I have never won anything in my life that I put some work in on. It's all kinda strange still, especially with the competition I had. All I know is that I am TOO busy with the projects I have in front of me now! Can't wait for future contests!! Thanks again should go out to Alan, probably the most enjoyable contest of FX to date...
