Taking Advantage by: Nate Zelinsky   10/23/2009

Lets face it - the warmer weather is slipping away day by day! Along with that, our water temps are sinking like an anchor.  A major player in producing fish of any kind is building a pattern and presenting your lure or bait to that fish.  There is something to be said about those last 2 sentences.  Take a Pike for example. This is a fish that loves to bake in the sun on a warm summer day.  When these water temps are cold, these fish start to move to deeper water and start to pout about the cold.  A lot of anglers think these cold temps are a sign to stop fishing, but I look at these cold times as a time for these fish to gather and stay in one place.  I love it. I leave one day, and the next the fish are still there waiting to be caught.  You have to learn to take advantage of all situations that you encounter.

The one rule I always follow is that fish have to eat and if they don't, they die!  So my thought is, if you present a bait right and get it close enough to the fish, you can catch that fish.  I don't care if it's a cold front of cold water, or whatever, take every situation for what it is and learn from it.  I am now approaching the last week of what has been an amazing Pike fall.  It has been amazing due to the fact that the cold water and weather has pushed these fish to deeper water where they have found stable temps and stable food.  Once I figured out how to present a bait to those fish, we have hammered them day in and day out.  So, next time you're on the water, try to take advantage of what you have been dealt and work that into your pattern!

So well said Nate. I have been fishing for Pike for the last few trips at the mile. We have caught smaller pike on many different presentations, and still have not found that pattern. The hunt is awesome. When I get on a pattern, you will be the first one I call and share with the teacher what has finally payed off....
