Busy, busy, busy
by: Dan Swanson 7/12/2009
I can't believe how fast this spring and summer are flying by! I've been guiding on Horsetooth a couple days a week and on the water almost every weekday just to keep tabs on what's going on with the bass and walleye bite. I'm also taking advantage of the high water and doing some lake mapping. It's been a ton of fun and catching a lot of fish.
I've gone through 2 tubs of Gulp and about 100 1/8 oz. Eagle Claw jigs. The popper bite was a blast a month ago and had some fun with a slip bobber bite for the kids. When the lake goes down you'll be able to "harvest" some of my crankbaits that broke off while trolling against the rocks and vegetation.
So far, with 3 tournaments under the belt this year it's been without fanfare. Great pre-fishing at both Glendo and Boysen - big fish and lots of them (a 29.5 inch walleye, a 3+ pound largemouth, huge crappies and monster rainbows at Boysen). Good numbers of fish caught on tournament days but nothing big enough to make a difference and get into the money. Two more to go, let's hope we find the fish on the right days this time.
Based on the forum pages it looks like many of you are taking advantage of the high water on the lakes and are getting out fishing. The rivers are clearing up and finally dropping so there are good opportunities to get out and fish for those other fish, too. Enjoy.
