Big Things in Small Places
by: Terry Munfrada 4/22/2009
So as most of you know I have been in fishing overdrive. After 21 days this month, I have fished on 15 of them including the last 8 straight. Now granted these are not all day trips to the Gunnison Gorge or the Frying Pan tail water. Over half of them have been evening trips from 3 or so until dark. I have had a good friend along for almost every one of these trips. He is a very hardcore fly guy FOR TROUT! When we started hitting the bass and other warm water fish he put up his fly rod and broke out the plastics, because as much as he is a fly guy for trout, he loves tossing plastics for bass even more.
Every trip out we have both done well with our chosen weapons, you have all probably seen the crappie by now and I have also landed some great bass.
Then came yesterday. We ventured out to a very small pond that we have been hitting about once a week, just to keep the pressure down. As it has been, I was using the long stick, and my buddy was deep dredging with soft plastics. We have fished this pond quite a bit, and it has given up what we thought of as trophies for a pond of less than an acre, a couple of fish between 3 and 4 pounds, and always a lot of small fish. Last night we found out that given the right conditions and with a bit of luck, that even the smallest of ponds can grow big fish. One fish landed that was 5-6 pounds and another that threw the hook that was BIGGER!!
Get out there and explore some small ponds, you might be very surprised at what you find.
